Call to Tackle Transport Poverty in Rural Wales

September 2022 | Featured, Rural poverty

There is an urgent need for action to address transport poverty in Wales says a recent paper by cycling charity Sustrans (May 2022). The paper, Making the Connection argues that more people  face the risk of being dragged into transport poverty as a result of the cost-of-living crisis.

Using evidence first published in 2018 by the Wales Centre for Public Policy, the paper states that the loss of public transport services disproportionately hits those living in rural areas of Wales, where public transport plays a key role in enabling access to services, employment, training and recreation.

The paper calls for renewed focus on the connection between transport and inequality ensuring that everyone has access to the services that enable them to live happy and healthy lives.
