Mid and West Wales Fire and rescue Service issue warning to farmers

July 2023 | Featured, Rural policy

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service have published a reminder to farmers to take measure to ensure their buildings are safe from fire following the recent dry weather.

The service notes that there has been an increase in incidences of barn fires following the dry weather leading to farmers harvesting and storing hay earlier than usual.

The note outlines the appropriate moisture levels needed when storing hay bales as well as mixed bales comprised of hay, straw and bracken. Keeping bales that have higher moisture levels risks the bales increasing in temperature after they have been stacked and stored, increasing the risk of spontaneous fires.

You can find out more information regarding appropriate moisture levels in bales on the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service website.
